Meteor Explodes Over United States, Renewing Questions About Fireball Activity in 2026

Residents across parts of Massachusetts and New Hampshire were startled on May 30 when a bright daytime fireball streaked across the sky before exploding high above the northeastern United States.
Witnesses described hearing powerful sonic booms, while others reported houses shaking and windows rattling as the object broke apart in the atmosphere. The event was significant enough to trigger reports to local authorities and seismic monitoring agencies, with some initially wondering whether a small earthquake had occurred.
According to NASA, the object entered Earth’s atmosphere travelling at approximately 75,000 miles per hour before disintegrating around 40 miles above the ground. The resulting airburst released energy estimated at roughly 300 tons of TNT, creating the shockwave heard across the region.
While dramatic, the event has also renewed interest in a question that has been quietly emerging throughout 2026: are large fireballs becoming more common?
The answer depends on where you look.
One explanation is simple. Humanity is watching the skies more closely than ever before. Security cameras, dashcams, satellites, meteor networks and smartphones now capture events that would have passed largely unnoticed a generation ago. A fireball that once might have been witnessed by a handful of people can now be recorded from dozens of angles and shared worldwide within minutes.
Yet some recent data suggests there may be more to the story.
The American Meteor Society’s analysis of the first quarter of 2026 found that while overall fireball numbers remained broadly in line with recent years, larger and more widely witnessed events appeared noticeably elevated. Reports involving fifty or more observers were approximately double the average recorded between 2018 and 2025.
Events attracting more than one hundred witness reports also showed a significant increase.
Whether this reflects a genuine rise in atmospheric entries or simply improved observation remains an open question, but it is enough to attract attention from both researchers and skywatchers.
Events such as the New England airburst serve as a reminder of Earth’s place within a constantly changing cosmic environment. Every day, our planet encounters dust, debris and rocky material left behind by asteroids and comets. Most of it burns harmlessly high above our heads, often unnoticed. Occasionally, however, a larger object enters the atmosphere and announces its arrival with a flash bright enough to turn heads and a shockwave powerful enough to shake homes.
For those who witnessed the May 30 event, it was a spectacular reminder that space is not as distant as it sometimes appears.
